High definition has become an important part of today's society. The HD disc format is Blu-ray disc, which many HD users have heard of but do not know much about.
Before high definition discs could be thought of, there had to be high definition. It was in 1998 that HDTVs became commercially available, but the market did not have any compatible products to go with the new TVs.
High definition requires a vast amount of data to operate. All the types of media that could be purchased did not meet this need. The apparent method of increasing storage capacity was to use a blue laser.
Shuji Nakamura is responsible for inventing the blue laser diode. This was an efficient version of the already available blue lasers. Blue laser diodes are vital components of both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs.
The introduction of blue laser diodes was quickly capitalized on. Sony and Philips started a temporary partnership to utilize the new technology. UDO and DVR Blue preceded the onset of the final product, Blu-ray disc.
These predecessors were worked on for two years before, in February 2002, Blu-ray was officially announced. To promote the new format, the Blu-ray Disc Association was formed and consisted of just nine integral members.
The introduction of Blu-ray may have been a bit premature, as it was two years later that the format actually was finished. Even then, it took one more year for everything to be complete.
