Musical Instruments Keyboard - Is a computer synth right for you?

With the price of computers falling everyday and the power that sits inside going up, the option to use them as musical instruments with midi keyboard controllers has never been greater. The vast array of choices can leave the beginner with information overload, especially when deciding which if a traditional route maybe be better than going with a computer setup. We will cover the costs of of both setups along with how expandable and portable each solution is. By the end hopefully you will have a better understanding of what a workstation or software solution can offer you and then make a sensible choice on your purchase.

All musical instruments in one way or another seem to be showing up in a digital format these days and the piano has been at the forefront of this digital age with the use of a keyboard for longer than any. The major advancements in this technology came in the 60's with the great Moog synthesizers came on the market. While these were still analog, the achievements made paved the way for digital keyboards in the decades to come. In today's market the question is not about digital versus analog but whether or not a piece of computer software can hold up against the more familiar workstations.

So that leaves us with the current set of choices that seem to be most prevalent among new keyboard purchasers. Do you buy the all in one workstation which would be considered the more traditional route or do you go the newer computer/software road. There are many things to consider before making your choice and hopefully I will be able to shed some new light on which one is right for you. First things first lets see what makes up each keyboard setup. For the workstation its simply the keyboard along with any accessories you would want to include, but for the most part everything you need is built into the synthesizer. Things are a bit more difficult for using software. Your brains of the operation will be a computer so if you want this to be portable then you will have to use a laptop.

Secondly you will need an audio sound card to handle the processing of the digital signal. Its possible the one built into your computer may be ok for just one signal with a half to quarter inch jack converter running into the microphone input, but chances are the latency (the time it takes for you to hit a key and have it converted and output through your speakers) will be too high to deal with. So along with a computer you will need a simple external sound card to process the signal. Add to that a midi controller and the software and you now have a solid software setup.

Wow, it can be a bit overwhelming when considering a software setup. So why would anyone choose this route then? As far as Im concerned the sounds are far superior to anything you will find built into a workstation and the ability to expand your setup and add-on is limitless. Not only that, but you now have the capability to record your ideas or songs using a piece of recording software like (Pro-Tools, Nuendo, etc). As a matter of fact you kill two birds with one stone buy purchasing an M-box by Pro-Tools. Not only would that allow you to record onto your computer and come with the software to do that, you could use it for live performances as well.

When decision time comes, does setup time and portability weigh heavier than the quality of sounds and limitless extensibility? You also have to consider that the software solution adds a home studio into the equation for no extra cost. To be fair, workstations do have the capability to do some simple recordings but it is not something you could really take advantage of in a band situation. I don't know about you but I like the idea of doing some full demos as well.

When looking for the right software I would look at Native Instruments as a great starting place. A personal favorite of mine is also the libraries created by East West. They use professional musicians to record each sound and create a sound bank of wav files of organic instruments. With a keyboard controller you can build an entire score that will sound just as real as an actual symphony.

Finally what are the cost benefits of going one way or another? Well if you need portability do you have a laptop? If not then its easy to say that the software route will cost more due to the fact that a laptop will need to be included in the overall price. Workstations will range from 1 to 4 grand and will probably have better playability than most midi keyboard controllers.

When you add up your main components (controller, sound-card, and software) you should be able to stay under one thousand dollars. You do have to be aware that some software, including the above mentioned East West, can be just as pricey as a new laptop. In the end, the amount of software you decide to buy is what will really determine how much you spend on this setup. Hopefully I have been able to guide you through the mysterious world of software setups for the keyboard (or even other musical instruments) and you should now be able to make better choice as to which is right for you. - 16036

Swift Nature Camp has a blog that gives campers and the rest of the world a opportunity to check us out. We have plenty of articles every few days going up. I have taken the time to show you a few from our summer camp blog.

Swift nature Camp is so much more than FUN. Our tree of Values helps campers concentrate on the importance of group living. The life skills that are so important to yourself and to others. The tree has 12 branches that include: Responsibility, Persistence, Honesty, Enthusiasm and a host of others. Nation wide there is a program called Character Counts. This is our program and each day we use these values. But it's when we focus on them and keep them in the forefront of our daily life that it helps us make good choices. Daily we might see these values as you help another camper carry a hiking pack or maybe as you forgive a camper that touched your stuff. Swift Nature Camp, like life has many opportunities to use the SNC tree of values. After all camp is just a little piece of life that you will never forget.

This year we are so excited that our pottery program will get a blast at camp. Our new Arts & Crafts Director Laura has years of experience in pottery and working with clay. So this year more than ever before we hope to see campers sculpting, and working on the wheel and kiln firing all those projects. All this means that there are going to be wonderful projects coming out of the ARTS & CRAFTS CASTLE this summer. Stuff like sculpted animals, multicolored tiles, giant coil pots, and delicate wheel-thrown cups and bowls. Let nature be a part of your clay work by taking a smooth slab of clay and press natural forms into it so that they leave intricate textures. You know, acorns, twigs, leaves, and tree bark, they all leave amazing patterns. then this can be turned in to a vase or some other vessel or just a fired the way it is. Swift Nature Camp's summer pottery program is going to be one of our most exciting programs in the summer of 2009. There's almost an endless variety of pottery projects to make which you can take back to home your family and friends

Camp is so different than home because often at school children hangout with kids that are homogeneous. That's right all the same, same age, same gender, same community and more. Opportunities to make friends are not much more than others in class or down the block. However, at Swift Nature Camp kids get an opportunity to spend time with others, both younger and older and from different parts of the country or world. It is interesting how often the older teens become natural leaders for the younger kids, by "adopting them". Not only is this true with campers but also for counselors as well. Our staff are generally college aged folks studying to be teachers. They truly look at SNC as a learning opportunity. They are camper centered making them great role models for today's youth. Then consider the SENIOR staff at camp...the oldsters do round out a super community which entices children to make new friends. So when you are thinking about camp it is easy to think about all the activities. However, Summer Camp is so much more! Children's summer camp is more like the real world, the social benefits of this multiage, multicultural experience are significant. Research has shown getting children ready for multiage, multicultural world only helps them be more successful in life. Camp provides less competitiveness making it much easier to make and keep your summer camp friends. Ask any camper what makes Swift Nature Camp so special and they will tell you it's "the new camp friends". But ask them why any? And they will tell you it's because they accept me for who I am often unlike my friends at home. I can do stuff at camp that I can never tell my friends back home about.

Patients who cannot afford professional-grade whitening but wish to have quick results aren't quite out of luck. You can shorten the time you have to wait for whiter teeth by choosing a product that can be left on the teeth for eight hours a day. You can put the tray into your mouth when it's time to sleep. This treatment will show its results in no more than a week.

Yet, the fastest whitening method available is known as laser teeth whitening. As in the case of bleaching, you should get the doctor's approval to undergo this kind of procedure. If everything is alright, the dentist will put a rubber dam on your gums. This will act as a shield, protecting your gums from any damage. Afterwards, the whitening substance will be applied and the laser will be used to magnify the chemicals' effect.

The effects of whitening treatments can last up to three years and may differ from one person to another. Of course, if you keep on smoking and consuming beverages and foods that can stain your teeth, the effect is less likely to last long. After the treatment, your teeth may become sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. However, these symptoms usually disappear within a few days.
